The Montreal Metro Blue Line Extension is a major infrastructure project that will expand public transportation into the city’s east-end neighborhoods. The 4.6 km extension will include five new stations and require tunneling as much as 40 metres below the surface, passing beneath numerous buildings, structures, and utilities.

To help protect these assets and support safe construction, GEO-Instruments was mandated by the Mobilité Bleu Horizon (MBH) consortium to provide comprehensive monitoring services throughout the tunneling works. The monitoring system is designed to detect and measure surface settlement, ground movement, and structural deformation as the tunnel boring machine (TBM) progresses along its route.

GEO-Instruments’ scope includes both above-ground and in-ground monitoring, with a network designed to provide precise information on the movement and behaviour of surrounding structures, ground, and utilities. Data is collected automatically and made available to the project team through real-time monitoring and online dashboards, with alerts allowing potential movement to be identified and investigated promptly.

As the TBM advances along its route, the monitoring network will continue to evolve, with additional monitoring points and equipment being deployed as required. GEO-Instruments’ services also include procurement and project management, drilling coordination, on-site supervision, instrument installation, system commissioning, and data management.

Drawing on our experience with major tunneling and infrastructure projects, GEO-Instruments is proud to contribute to the safe construction of Montreal’s Blue Line Extension by providing reliable monitoring throughout the project.
